Raku

After weeks building the kiln — cutting, testing and adjusting every detail — we're finally ready to share it. A hands-on, experimental ceramic firing workshop using different Raku techniques, exploring processes, materials and unique results.

Cocción Raku en La Clandestina

01 / What is Raku

Raku is a traditional Japanese ceramic firing technique in which pieces are removed from the kiln red-hot (approx. 1000 °C) and placed in containers with organic materials (sawdust, leaves, feathers, etc.).

This process creates a reducing atmosphere that produces unique effects: metallic, smoked and crackled finishes that can never be repeated.

02 / Techniques we'll explore

Less aggressive

  • Natural cooling without thermal shock
  • Saggar: pieces wrapped in foil with organic materials
  • Pit firing: firing in the open fire with the piece wrapped in fabrics and organic materials
  • Carbonisation / saggar firing: reduction in closed containers

Moderately aggressive

  • High-temperature extraction without subsequent thermal shock
  • Sweet Raku (horsehair, sugar, etc.): direct interventions on the hot piece

Very aggressive

  • Techniques with thermal shock for more intense effects
  • Naked Raku: with prior slip preparation and sawdust reduction
  • Obvara: dipping in a mixture of water, flour, yeast and sugar

03 / Workshop formats

For ceramicists: bring your own Raku-ready (bisque-fired) pieces and experiment with different surface techniques. Duration: 4–5 hours. Price: €68 per person.

For the general public: day 1, making pieces; day 2, Raku firing (optional day 3 depending on format). No previous experience needed. We're preparing sessions with pieces included so you can experience the whole process from scratch.

What you'll take home: a hands-on introduction to Raku firing, experimentation with different techniques and finishes, an understanding of reduction and thermal shock processes, and unique, one-of-a-kind pieces.
